Thoughts on Creativity – A Ramble!

Where does creativity reside? In your soul? In your head? In your cells? In the atmosphere?

Where do these ideas come from when we write a poem, a song, a novel or a short story? Or when we make a movie that goes on to win numerous Oscars? Are these ideas unique to us?

Some believe that we are all connected, so one thing experienced by someone elsewhere actually becomes a shared experience and felt universally! A part of a collective consciousness if you like. It probably explains why we write similar things from time to time or come up with similar ideas. Therefore, if we are all connected then we are all capable of the same things, the same potential, the same genius. So then, if Agatha Christie wrote over seventy books (which she did), that should mean I can as well! And so can you!

To expand. Could there be some creative link that binds us all, that somehow joins us? So, when we as individuals choose to write, horror, crime or romance fiction, is this just our own way of setting the soul free? A kind of unleashing of profound ideas that grew in your head first and then became a movie, a piece of sculpture, a song. Could creativity be the personification of all things: feelings, desires, dreams, deep thoughts…

I couldn’t possibly give a definitive answer.

Here’s another thought/question for you. Could creativity be a way to interpret the world, at times, a crazy world? A way of putting a positive slant on unpleasant things that happen to you or someone else. If you are recovering from say a broken heart a lost love, in your book or movie you could create the opposite outcome and have your main characters live happily ever after! No kidding, it does happen!

Or, when you are writing that novel, or painting that masterpiece, could it be your way of leaving something sublime and unique behind? A kind of thumbs up to life, in all its magnificence! A message that will be unique to you, but we can all understand and appreciate on a deeper level.

Alternatively, these ideas that morph into bestsellers or hit movies can be viewed as a pleasant means of escape, an opportunity to forget who we are for the moment and be entertained. Or, if it is a reflection of something that is not exactly pleasant, but it resonates with you, then you know you are not alone. Take comfort in that.

So where does creativity reside? It resides somewhere nameless within us all. And where do these ideas come from? They spring forth from us all and we are therefore as connected to it, as it is to us! One is dependent upon the other for its existence and survival. Ideas circulate invisibly just waiting for someone like you, to bring them to life…

Be a fruitful creative being!

Until next time, S

  1. I love this “piece-of-mind”! I personally think that writing comes from something and you’ve put it in perspective. i probably want to write that novel, depicting my upbringing in the ghettos but with a more heroic outcome, than getting married at 17, for example pffft. 🙂
